During his brief yet legacies packed presidency, Yar’Adua established the National Economic Management Team that championed several economic reforms that had unfathomable impact on the country’s economic stability. One notable effort was the amendment of the constitution to include a fiscal responsibility act. This policy promoted prudent management of Nigeria’s resources, long-term macroeconomic stability, and greater accountability and transparency in fiscal operations.
His government also meritoriously managed Nigeria’s sovereign wealth fund, which increased the country’s international reserves by $12 billion (Umar, 2010).
In the kingdom of infrastructure and power reform, Yar’Adua masterminded and supervised the expressway rehabilitation project, which exponentially improved Nigeria’s transportation and logistics capacities, and improved electricity generation and distribution respectively. Through these actions, Yar’Adua established an uncommon and proficient ability to combine economic insight with pragmatic governance.
Still, what was prominent about Yar’Adua is his committed approach towards ethics and justice – he was a man of impeccable integrity, which he demonstrated by becoming the first Nigerian head of state to declare his assets openly. Likewise, his earth-shattering efforts towards peace in the Niger Delta, helped reduce violence and militancy in the Niger Delta region climaxing in the granting of amnesty to militants. This surely still speaks volumes about his aptitude for pursuing non-violence and diplomacy over brute force.
Sadly, his sickness resulted in a premarture end for his presidency, a presidency that would have endeared beyond generations, an evelasting legacy for Nigerians. Amidst controversy and speculations, Yar’adua returned to Nigeria after several months of treatment in Saudi Arabia. His absence during this period led to a constitutional amendment, instructing that the then Vice President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should take on the role of acting president in cases of the President’s inability to rule. With his legacy intact and the principles he lived for alive, his fight ended on May 5, 2010. This amendment further proves that even in illness, Yar’Adua profoundly shaped Nigeria’s legislative future.
