Senator Prince Pam Dachung of the Action Democratic Party, ADP (An extended arm of the PDP in Plateau State) has taken oath of office today at the Red Chambers as the Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District
Other winners of the 3rd February, 2024 rerun elections sworn in alongside Sen Pam are Professor Anthony Ani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to represent Ebonyi South, and Mustapha Musa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to represent Yobe East. The newly sworn in Senators were thereafter ushered to their respective seats after the swearing-in rituals.
Plateau North Senatorial seat was declared vacant by the Court of Appeal in November 2023 and a rerun election declared. In compliance with the judgement that sacked the former Senate Minority Leader, Sen Simon Mwadkon of PDP, INEC consequently omitted PDP from the rerun election
Upon realizing that PDP wasn’t on the ballot with less than 48 hours to the election, PDP in Plateau State led by Da Sen Jonah David Jang and Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang immediately activated their “Plan B” by adopting Prince Pam of the ADP.
PDP in Plateau State used the election to answer the former governor of the state, Rt Hon Simon Bako Lalong who, few days to the election, had boasted that his party, APC remains the most popular party in the state.
PDP adopted a relatively unknown party (ADP) that got only 442 votes in the 2023 general elections and showcased it political superiority to the APC in the state by trouncing the nation’s ruling party which came a distant fourth in the election.
The “adopted son of PDP” polled 122,443 votes in a landslide victory. In like manner, PDP adopted Hon Daniel Ago Asama of the Labour Party in the Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency rerun election held the same day and emerged victorious.
PDP is undoubtedly the party to beat anyday, anytime on the Plateau, however, Wase and Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke Federal Constituencies remain under the tight grip of APC due to the exceptional representation of Rt Hon Ahmed Idris Wase, the 9th Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives and Rt Hon Dr Adamu Yusuf Gagdi respectively.
With the rerun election and swearing in concluded in compliance with the Court of Appeal ruling, what becomes the fate of the PDP State legislators who are hoping that the Court of Appeal ruling be set aside in view of the superior court judgment, the Supreme Court.
Should the Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon Gabriel Dewan go ahead and swear in the APC legislators as declared by the Court of Appeal or Sen Prince Pam victory will be quashed alongside the State legislators in the ensuing legal tussle entered into by the PDP legislators to reclaim their mandates?
